The Mountain

A fantasy story is set in the wilderness of a mystical mountain environment.
What does a young boy do when he is about to embark on an adventure that will change him forever? Change the way he thinks and treats others. Others that he never thought he would meet or come to know.

This fantasy story is set in the wilderness of a mystical mountain environment where a boy named Thomas finds himself a part of a civilization unlike any he has ever known. Through one small act of kindness he becomes part of a much larger plan.

Young 12 year old Thomas is your not so typical kid. He has dirt clods in his shoes, a frog or some wiggly creature in his pants pockets, a shoelace that is untied , or his pant leg cuffed up to catch all sorts of field dwelling things. And living on a peaches farm is a great place to have adventures, and to get to know all the animals around. And one of the things he learns from working on the farm is to help your neighbor when they might need some help.

Mr John Parker lives on the next farm over, and on occasion he asks Thomas to lend a hand at his apple orchard, or at the dairy with all the milk cows that need to be fed. One day Mr Parker asks Thomas to help with gathering firewood up on the tall hill, known to all the area residents as The Mountain. It would take a few hours to find and gather the wood and Mr Parker could use and extra set of hands to help out. Thomas went along, for two reasons, he liked helping Mr Parker and the other was simply to get away from his math homework.

Up the slope they went, spotting and gathering into piles as they went, firewood they could retrieve on their way back down. But it was getting late and they were burning sun time, until Thomas heard a racket of noise he had not heard before and Mr Parker had not heard for a long time.

“Well I’ll be,” Mr Parker said. “These are squirrels. I expect their Mamma is off hunting for food. She’ll be back in a while.”

Thomas was not so sure and he wanted to stay with the three little ones, just to be sure that mama was going to come back. He would head down later one when he knew they were safe.

Mr Parker picked up what he could and headed back down with the firewood. “Oh and by the way, listen closely Thomas."

This was the beginning of a fantastic adventure, one that Thomas never imagined he would be part of.
The fourth edition of what has turned out to be a very popular novel for middle grade readers between the ages of 11-14 — about 5th through 8th grades — and surprisingly, adults too, who are raving about this book.
